Entrepreneurship and Innovation Strategies for Marginalized and Rural Communities Spotlighted at Wits University

Wits University recently hosted a groundbreaking event focused on Entrepreneurship and Innovation Strategies aimed at including marginalized and rural communities. The gathering brought together thought leaders, innovators, and community advocates to discuss practical approaches to bridging economic gaps and fostering inclusive development across South Africa.

One of the key highlights was the participation of Bongani Khumalo, the Deputy President of the TECSA Foundation, who served as a panelist in the strategic discussions. Khumalo emphasized that for South Africa’s economic transformation to be truly sustainable, rural and marginalized communities must not only be included but also empowered through skills development, access to resources, and market integration.

The event addressed a range of pressing issues, including barriers to entrepreneurship in underrepresented areas, the role of technology in enabling small businesses, and how public-private partnerships can accelerate change. Panelists shared case studies of successful rural enterprises and highlighted the importance of policy support, mentorship programs, and infrastructure development.

Participants agreed that innovation cannot thrive in isolation from community realities. The strategies discussed aimed to create pathways where rural entrepreneurs can leverage modern tools—such as digital platforms, mobile finance, and e-commerce—to reach wider markets and scale their impact.

With contributions from leaders like Bongani Khumalo, the event reinforced the commitment of stakeholders to transform the entrepreneurial landscape in South Africa, ensuring that no community is left behind in the journey toward economic inclusion and innovation-driven growth.
